Frequently Asked Questions
My child has never been in an orchestra. Is it competitive?
Our goal is to understand and make great music. Period. BCYAO provides a great platform for students who have two or more years of experience playing their instrument. Our philosophy is come, try, adapt, and conquer! Students learn by doing. We support everyone who has the desire to try. For the more advanced students some of the music may seem easy, but we have them dig deeper into the music, beyond the technical. Many students can play lots of notes, but have they been challenged to "make music?" Older students are also encouraged to support and help the younger ones. We also learn by teaching!
My child is in a lot of activities. We'd like to participate but can't attend all of the rehearsals. Should we still sign up?
We recently changed our schedule to late spring to avoid spring breaks and many of the spring musicals. Rehearsal attendance is crucial to a strong performance, and to ensure that your child receives all of the benefits of being in an organized ensemble. When one person is missing, it can make a difference for the entire section. With that said, we understand about busy schedules. We recommend a minimum of five rehearsals plus the concert but other circumstances can be accommodated with good communication. All absences should be reported in advance. Older students cannot skip rehearsals because they "know their part". Attendance is expected for the well-being of the ensemble.
We don't live in Boone County. Can we still participate?
Yes! We encourage regional participation!
